According
to the latest joint American Heart
Association/ American College of Sports
Medicine guidelines on physical activity,
all healthy adults ages 18-65 should
be getting at least 30 minutes of
moderate intensity activity five days
of the week. However, there are additional
guidelines for those 65 and older,
or for those 50-64 with chronic conditions
or physical functional limitations
(e.g., arthritis) that affect movement
ability or physical fitness.

| What
Is a Heart Attack? |
A
heart attack occurs when blood
flow to a section of heart muscle
becomes blocked. If the flow of
blood isnt restored quickly,
the section of heart muscle becomes
damaged from lack of oxygen and
begins to die.
Heart attack is a leading killer
of both men and women in the United
States. But fortunately, today
there are excellent treatments
for heart attack that can save
lives and prevent disabilities.
Treatment is most effective when
started within 1 hour of the beginning
of symptoms. If you think you
or someone youre with is
having a heart attack, call 911
right away.
Overview
Heart attacks occur most often
as a result of a condition called
coronary artery disease (CAD).
In CAD, a fatty material called
plaque (plak) builds up over many
years on the inside walls of the
coronary arteries (the arteries
that supply blood and oxygen to
your heart). Eventually, an area
of plaque can rupture, causing
a blood clot to form on the surface
of the plaque. If the clot becomes
large enough, it can mostly or
completely block the flow of oxygen-rich
blood to the part of the heart
muscle fed by the artery.

How
to find if someone has a stroke
Remember the 1st Three Letters

| Stroke
Identification |
 |
It
only takes a minute to read this!
A neurologist says that if he can get
to a stroke victim within 3 hours he
can totally reverse the effects of a
stroke...totally. He said the trick
was getting a stroke recognized, diagnosed,
and then getting the patient medically
cared for within 3 hours, which is tough. |

| Recognizing
A Stroke |
 |
Thank
God for the sense to remember the '3'
steps, S.T.R .
Read and Learn!
Sometimes symptoms of a stroke are difficult
to identify. Unfortunately, the lack
of awareness spells disaster. The stroke
victim may suffer severe brain damage
when people nearby fail to recognize
the symptoms of a stroke.
Now doctors say a bystander can recognize
a stroke by asking three simple questions: |
|
S
Ask the individual to SMILE. |
T
Ask the person to TALK and SPEAK
A SIMPLE SENTENCE (Coherently)
(i.e. It is sunny out today.) |
|
R
Ask him or her to RAISE BOTH
ARMS. |
If
he or she has trouble with ANY ONE of
these tasks, call emergency number immediately
and describe the symptoms to the dispatcher.
New sign of a stroke STICK OUT
YOUR TONGUE.
NOTE: Another 'sign' of a stroke is
this: Ask the person to 'stick' out
his or her tongue. If the tongue is
'crooked' or if it goes to one side
or the other, that is also an indication
of a stroke. |
